Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Launches Pakistan Branch


The world’s leading qualifications and professional body for dispute avoidance and dispute management, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Pakistan Branch officially launched its newest branch in Pakistan.
CIArb is passionate about promoting a harmonious society and helping people and organizations avoid, manage and resolve conflicts through its global network of over 17,000 members.
The launch event was hosted on 27th May 2022 at PC Lahore with the conference titled, “Conference on Judicial Perspectives on Domestic and International Arbitration in Pakistan“.
The Honourable Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan Mr. Justice Mansoor Ali Shah on behalf of the Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Umer Ata Bandial welcomed Barrister Mian Sheraz Javaid as the Chair and Nasir Khan MBE as Vice Chair of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Pakistan Branch.
Barrister Mian Sheraz Javaid – Chair CIArb Pakistan Branch
Barrister Mian Sheraz Javaid FCIArb FCInstCES FPD ICE MPEC LHCBA, LBA, SCL, IBA, is a Managing Partner at MK Consultus LLP and works as a counsel, arbitrator, mediator, and adjudicator, a dual-qualified civil engineer – barrister with more than 20 years of experience in all aspects of construction contracts, litigation, and dispute resolution. Mr. Javaid is highly qualified in dealing with energy, power, and infrastructure-related matters.
Mr. Javaid’s core area of expertise is dispute avoidance with special emphasis on the role of Dispute Resolution Advisor (DRA) for commercial entities involved in large to medium scale construction projects both in private and government sector, devising the right procurement method for a construction project along with the appropriate standard form of contract and training & development of the enterprises both public and private sector to equip for dispute avoidance and standard forms.
He practices in all aspects of construction litigation and contract drafting/negotiation, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), Mediation, Adjudication, Neutral Evaluation, Arbitration, licensing, and other construction issues. Mr. Javaid is well equipped to deal with land development-related matters and controversies (especially ones involving technical issues) and to champion client interests before regulatory officials and approval bodies. Mr. Javaid is representing governments, owners, developers, builders, contractors, subcontractors, sureties, and consulting/design professionals.
He is a Fellow of various institutions and is on the Approved Faculty List of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators teaching arbitration and mediation. Mr. Javaid is the co-author of the first of its kind cumulative report on construction disputes in Pakistan titled Pakistan Construction Disputes Report.
Nasir Khan – Vice Chair CIArb Pakistan Branch
Nasir Khan MBE FCIArb FCIPS FCInstCES PE is the Director of Contract Solutions Currie & Brown UK Limited. Mr. Nasir is a skilled and dynamic leader with 20 years’ experience providing total solutions of procurement, commercial, dispute avoidance, management, and resolution through effective pre- and post-contract management.
He is an engineer, chartered quantity surveyor, chartered procurement specialist and is legally qualified. He has fellowship of various institutions and acts as an expert, mediator, adjudicator and arbitrator.
He is versatile and well-versed in the successful delivery of major projects including energy, utilities, commercial property, oil and gas, manufacturing, ports, highways and rail. Nasir has led large and complex procurement programmes, as well as claims on quantum, delay, and engineering issues. He co-authored the Pakistan Construction Disputes Report.
Mr Nasir’s social activities include co-founding Muslims in Rail, a community interest company for which he was awarded an MBE for his services to equality, diversity, and inclusion. He was recently appointed Chair of Trustees for Faith Legal Resolutions, a pro-bono legal advisory and dispute resolution service for communities in the UK.
Mr. Nasir has led the foundation of CIArb Pakistan Branch and is the Vice Chair of the Branch leading on the delivery of its key objectives:
- Provide education and training for arbitrators, mediators, and adjudicators.
- Act as a hub for practitioners, policy makers, academics, and those in business, supporting the promotion, facilitation, and development of all ADR methods.
- Facilitate quick, confidential, and cost-effective dispute avoidance and dispute resolution mechanisms for both civil and commercial disputes.
- Develop a coordinated legal education and business engagement strategy to promote the benefits of ADR.
- ADR Centre that will provide Dispute Appointment Service and Business Arbitration Scheme.
- Maintain a register of qualified arbitrators, mediators, and ADR practitioners.
