CIArb held its first official event in Pakistan on 10 March 2021 at Jinnah Auditorium, City Court in association with Karachi Bar Association. For a virtual audience, the session was also streamed online via Zoom. The session was moderated by Syed Mustafa Mahdi FCIArb and the main speakers were:
- Mian Sheraz Javaid – Chair CIArb Pakistan Branch
- Nasir Khan – Vice Chair CIArb Pakistan Branch
- Naeem Qureshi – President Karachi Bar Association
This was the first ever event held by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) in Pakistan, and intends to pave the way for onward trainings and opportunities that CIArb shall share with members of Karachi Bar Association.
The event was open to all members of the fraternity and the aim of KBA to develop skills of its members at international level and was attended by high profile judges and domestic and international experts and dignitaries. CIArb hopes to conduct future seminars to promote the growing trend of ADR on an international landscape.
Event Speakers
A “non-traditional” construction lawyer in Pakistan who began his professional career as a civil engineer. Skilled and dynamic leader with 17+ years of demonstrated capacity in all aspects of construction litigation and contract drafting/negotiation, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), Mediation, Adjudication, Neutral Evaluation, Arbitration, licensing, and other construction issues. Mr. Javaid’s core area of expertise is dispute avoidance with special emphasis on the role of Dispute Resolution Advisor (DRA) for commercial entities involved in large to medium scale construction projects both in private and government sector, devising the right procurement method for a construction project along with the appropriate standard form of contract and training & development of the enterprises both public and private sector to equip for dispute avoidance and standard forms. Mr. Javaid was admitted to the Punjab Bar Council, Lahore Pakistan as an advocate in 2003, as an Advocate High Court in 2005 and has recently been admitted as a Barrister in England and Wales. Mr. Javaid is a Partner of MK Consultus Limited.
Nasir is a skilled and dynamic leader with 20 years’ experience providing total solutions of procurement, commercial, dispute avoidance, management and resolution through effective pre- and post-contract management.
He is an engineer, chartered quantity surveyor, chartered procurement specialist and is legally qualified. He has fellowship of various institutions and acts as an expert, mediator, adjudicator and arbitrator.
He is versatile and well-versed in the successful delivery of major projects including energy, utilities, commercial property, oil and gas, manufacturing, ports, highways and rail. Nasir has led large and complex procurement programmes, as well as claims on quantum, delay and engineering issues.
Nasir co-founded Muslims in Rail and was awarded an MBE for his services to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Syed Mustafa Mahdi FCIArb, is a common law qualified lawyer with a professional experience of 10 years and practising at the Bar in Sindh (High Court), Pakistan. Syed specialises in corporate law, aviation, hospitality, shipping, customs, construction, arbitration, financial markets, and cross-border transactions to which he brings a commercial, pragmatic and organised approach with a depth of experience and knowledge. Syed is regarded by his peers as one the prominent and accomplished attorney in this field.
